Steel Heads – Applications and Types

Heads are widely used in various industries. They can be divided according to the manufacturing standard, i.e. e.g. shape, steel grade and intended use as well as manufacturing standards. This blog presents the main types and applications of dished heads.

1. Applications of steel heads

• Blanking heads – installed at the ends of pipelines in order to close them.

• Flat heads – used in simple structures, often for technical purposes.

• Decorative heads – used as decorative elements, e.g. with flower plantings or flower beds. Here, dished heads made of CORTEN steel are often used. The dished head ( steel flower pot ) then has a characteristic rusty colour.

2. Types of steel heads according to standards.

The "standard" of a head - determines what the dished head should look like, what shape, height and wall thickness it should have.

• Toroidal (basket) heads – manufactured in accordance with the DIN 28011 standard.

• Ellipsoidal heads – manufactured in accordance with the DIN 28013 standard; most commonly used in the production of pressure vessels.

• Steel heads according to European standards:

  • manufactured according to PN, including PN-64/M-35411, PN-75/M-35412, PN-69//M-35413.

  • manufactured according to EN, including EN10253-2 A and EN10253-2 B. In series B, the wall thicknesses of the dished heads are slightly greater than in series A. EN10253-2 B.

• Steel heads according to the American ASME B16.9 standard.

3. Special Heads

4. Materials from which steel heads are made

We manufacture dished heads from high-quality steel, adapted to various operating conditions. The most commonly selected steel grades from which heads are made include:

• stainless steel, acid-resistant steel:

  • AISI 304 / 1.4301

  • AISI 316 / 1.4404

  • AISI 316Ti / 1.4571

• carbon steel:

  • S235JR, S355J2, S355NH

  • P235GH, P265GH

  • 16Mo3 – intended for operation at elevated temperatures

• American steel grades:

  • ASME SA / A234WPB

  • ASME SA516 GR.60 / P265GH,

  • ASME SA-240 / 316 T

• decorative steels:

  • Corten
