What Is the Difference Between 2D, 3D and 5D Elbows?
What Is the Difference Between 2D, 3D and 5D Elbows?

🔥 POLBERIS Customer Question

What Is the Difference Between a 2D, 3D and 5D Elbow?

The shortest answer is:

👉 2D, 3D and 5D elbows differ only in the bend radius.

The larger the number before the letter D, the larger the bend radius.

🔶 2D Elbow

✔️ bend radius = 2 × pipe diameter

  • takes up less space,

  • causes greater flow resistance,

  • used where compact installation is important.

🔶 3D Elbow

✔️ bend radius = 3 × pipe diameter

  • a compromise between space and flow,

  • often used in industrial installations.

🔶 5D Elbow

✔️ bend radius = 5 × pipe diameter

  • very gentle bend,

  • lowest pressure losses,

  • better medium flow,

  • less wear of the installation,

  • recommended for high flow velocities.

Which One to Choose?

✅ 2D – when saving space is important.

✅ 3D – universal application.

✅ 5D – when the lowest possible flow resistance is most important.

The larger the elbow radius, the more smoothly the medium flows, which reduces turbulence and pressure drops.

Therefore, 5D elbows are very often selected in installations with high flow rates, while 2D elbows are better suited where space is limited.

The POLBERIS offer includes 2D, 3D and 5D Hamburg elbows in many diameters and steel grades.

💬 And you? Which elbows do you use most often – 2D, 3D or 5D?

The POLBERIS offer includes both components made of A105 steel and their hot-dip galvanized versions.
