Properties of Silicone Gaskets
Silicone is a material with a macromolecular structure, based on silicon atoms - which determines its properties.
Silicone in solid form, as a solid body, sheet, is an elastomer that
is resistant to temperatures over a wide range from -60° to +250°C, non-flammable,
( high-temperature silicone is resistant to temperatures above 300°C for a limited time ),
does not change its mechanical properties as a result of exposure to temperature, whether low or high,
is highly stretchable and resistant to compression,
is waterproof, resistant to the harmful effects of oxygen, ozone, ultraviolet radiation,
resistant to acids, alcohol, and other chemical compounds, oils, greases
does not absorb or release tastes and odors,
has a smooth surface, easy to clean,
is an electrical and thermal insulator,
Silicone gaskets dampen vibrations, including acoustic vibrations, are physiologically neutral, and can also be easily colored in a selected color.
The properties make silicone suitable for applications in contact with food and drinking water. Silicone gaskets and sheets ( rubber ) can be used as storage pads, transport pads, thermal barriers; gaskets of various shapes can be easily cut from silicone sheets.
Silicone materials and gaskets, due to their low chemical reactivity, are commonly used in pharmaceutical plants and distilleries, generally throughout the broadly understood food industry; for example, gaskets in all kinds of mixers or kitchen vessels.
Silicone sheets, gaskets, hoses, and cords perform excellently in air conditioning and ventilation equipment, in drying rooms and cold stores.
Due to its good dielectric properties and the ease of handling a flexible product, silicone is used in electronics; it is worth noting that through modifications, electrically conductive silicone is obtained, which is also used in electronics.
What are the disadvantages of silicone?
SILICONE has limitations in its areas of application:
although it is non-flammable, under the influence of high temperature - i.e. from approx. 300°C depending on the type - it melts,
Silicone gaskets are not resistant to high compressive forces and cannot withstand high pressures.
Although silicone is flexible and unbreakable, it does not have high tensile strength and is relatively easy to break or tear; silicone should not be subjected to dynamic loads under operating conditions,
under normal conditions silicone allows gases to pass through, which may prove to be an advantage or an obstacle depending on expectations.
