WOG ball valve

WOG Ball Valve

A WOG valve is a ball valve (also known as a ball cock) with a wide range of applications for media such as water, oil, and gas, used in industrial and municipal installations. WOG valves can be made of brass, carbon steel, or stainless steel, and it is common to find a combination of a brass or carbon steel body with a stainless steel ball.

Installation of WOG Ball Valve in a System

Installation connections are available as threaded, flanged, or with welding ends. The BSP thread is compatible with the G pipe thread, and NPT threads are also available according to American standards. Flanged connections are rated according to pressure based on European standards, with some also adhering to American ASME standards. Welding ends are often defined by the external diameter of the pipe × the thickness of the formed end. In American standards, you might also find a socket weld connection, marked as SW. Valve operation is typically handled by a manual lever, commonly with notches at the extreme positions.

WOG Ball Valve Marking

WOG valves are marked with the nominal diameter, the material used for construction, and the pressure class. The diameter is indicated in inches or the metric system (e.g., 2", which corresponds to DN 50 in the metric system). Both markings can appear together. The pressure class value specifies the maximum working pressure of the WOG valve at ambient temperature. Due to the Anglo-Saxon origin of the pressure rating system, pressure is given in PSI units, sometimes also in corresponding metric units with rounding from conversion factors e.g., class 1000, meaning 1000 PSI, is equivalent to class PN 63, or ( 63 bar ); class 600 is PN 40, etc.

Operating Conditions of WOG Ball Valves

If the working conditions differ from ambient temperature, refer to the valve's specifications and characteristics. The characteristics define the application field for temperature/pressure, while the material specification allows evaluating its suitability for specific media in contact with the valve. The material is defined by name or number according to the adopted system. For example, WCB refers to carbon steel for pressure applications at elevated temperatures; material can also be specified as stainless steel AISI 316 - 1.4408. The sealing material is also crucial; in most cases, pure PTFE is used, but sometimes reinforced with fiberglass or carbon fibers, or other materials like FPM/FKM fluoroelastomers.

Examples of WOG Ball Valve Applications

WOG valves are used in hot water preparation systems, industrial and domestic boiler rooms, heat exchange stations, and systems distributing water for heating purposes. They are also found in industrial cold water systems, booster stations, coolant and oil delivery systems to various machines, car washes, and compressed air systems in compressors.

However, there are limitations to the use of WOG valves. Water is simply water, and steam is not allowed; acceptable oils are those with lubricating properties, hydraulic fluids, and liquids with low density and viscosity. The gas must be neutral gas, usually air.

Exclusions for the Use of WOG Valves

In special areas, WOG valves cannot be directly installed. For contact with petroleum-derived substances, appropriate certifications are required. Even stainless steel WOG valves cannot be used for food media or drinking water without institutional approval— in Poland, this would be from the State Hygiene Institute. WOG valves are for neutral gases, and they are not permitted in installations for flammable gases, as well as gases like oxygen or chlorine. Planning the use of a WOG valve in specific applications requires comparing it with the properties and characteristics of the media or seeking a competent opinion.
